Game Day Snacks Earned Editorial

Game Day Snacks by State
As our final DIRECTV NFL SUNDAY TICKET content marketing campaign of 2015, we worked with Fractl to create a data-driven infographic experience looking at the trends in game day snacks, based on Instagram posts with the #gameday hashtag. The results were pretty surprising, and while likely skewed by snarky hipsters or brunch posts (or perhaps a Jambalaya fest in NJ...?), they've been causing a lively conversation. The piece, which was pitched to publisher sites as editorial linking back to our full deep-dive at gamedaysnacks.directv.com, earned over 125 placements within its first 48 hours and 140 for the total campaign. Some of the premium sites who ran the piece include Huffington Post, USA Today, San Jose Mercury News, and Chicago Tribune. While the primary goals were brand and buzz building for NFL SUNDAY TICKET, we've seen impressive engagement on landing, with visitors spending an average 2 min, 45 secs on the page, and a 3.4% click through rate on the upgrade message.

I'm excited to see what we can accomplish heading into 2016, with some fun campaigns in development to support some of our entertainment properties, including our exclusive Cinema pay-per-view movies.

Town without a team: NFL in LA

NFL in LA
To promote NFL SUNDAY TICKET on DIRECTV—which delivers live, out-of-market games to football fans—we worked with Tribune Publishing to create several native editorial pieces for the Los Angeles Times.

The marquis piece below, "Town Without a Team", is a video exploring the fascinating history of the NFL in LA, the largest U.S. market with its own team. With daily stories about a possible return to LA, it's particularly timely, and helps us reach our target customers in a huge market without local games. We were pleased to work with some old friends from our Magnet Media days, Kristen Berke at Tribune and Matt Landfield & Sophia Betz, who produced the piece (and just launched their studio, TimeTravlr Creative). The piece incorporates headlines and images from the LA Times' archives in a unique visual style.

RIP CHris Squire, 1948-2015

Chris Squire's name may not have been of the household persuasion, but to those who knew his work as a master and vanguard on the bass guitar, it was legendary.

Best known as a founding member of the progressive rock band, Yes, (as well as the only player to grace every single album and tour since 1968), Squire challenged the role of the bass in rock music, treating it not only as a foundational member of the rhythm section, but as a lead instrument. His sound was instantly unmistakable, his trademark Rickenbacker's trebly rotosound strings riding squarely in the forefront, weaving complex and mathematical lead and counterpoint lines in and out of the mix.

His vocals were every bit as crucial to the Yes sound, playing the Yin to fellow founder Jon Anderson's yang, their tight harmonies combining to form a sound uniquely Yes'.

U2 AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

U2 at MSG
I caught U2's "iNNOCENCE eXPERIENCE" tour at Madison Square Garden this past Sunday night, July 26.

It rocked.

This was my third time seeing them live, and while the first two shows (the "POPMART" tour at the Alamodome in San Antonio in 1997 and the "360" tour at Giants Stadium in NJ) were incredible, they seemed to be playing with even more energy and urgency this time around.

Some of the reviews I've read of the tour described them as playing the role of "underdog" this time around, with something to prove, and perhaps that's right. They've certainly had a challenging year, between the criticism they received for "forcing" their Songs of Innocence album into iTunes libraries (a move I had no complaints with personally, but it was certainly bold) and Bono's biking accident that left him in recovery for the next several months and by all accounts still unable to play the guitar at this point. So perhaps they do feel they have something to prove--and really, haven't they always fought to prove their relevance? Whatever the motivation, it works, and they dug into their early work with a confident, "we've earned this" swagger and played lesser-known tracks from the new album with urgency and polish.

...And we're live.

Welcome, friend.

I'm pleased to unveil my new site, which will serve as my professional home base and online resume & portfolio.

As for this blog specifically, I'm still working out its purpose and the best plan of attack. Should I post my latest projects and shameless self-promotion? Musings on the latest in marketing and technology? TV  and music  recommendations?

We'll see, but I wanted to at least celebrate turning the digital lights on and say thanks for stopping by, and perhaps soon there will be more reason to return to this page.

For now, please make yourself at home, wander through my projects, and drop me a line if you're interested in connecting.

Thanks,
Ryan
